Highmount — With summer in full swing, Belleayre Mt. Ski Center has made a full circle from winter operation to summer mode. The state owned ski center operated by the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA). Starting July 14, summer visitors have been riding “Catskill Thunder” the ski center’s newly installed gondola, for scenic trips to the top of the mountain. A series of free summer concerts has been introduced, mountain bikes are now available for rent and as always, the Belleayre Beach is a refreshing getaway on a hot summer day.
Tom Tar, Belleayre Mountain’s Acting Mountain Manager was excited about all of the activities BMSC the opportunity to get out on the trails has never been more accessible. Using traditional cross country ski trails below the lower, “Discovery Lodge,” the Belleayre staff created loops and other trail improvements that enhance the biking experience. There is no trail use fee and bikers can use their own bikes or the rentals. Bikers can also use all other trails on the mountain but there is no gondola or lift access to trails for bikers except those who choose to join a weekend tour.
Tar said that rentals come with helmets and a short “tutorial” from staff about how to use the bikes. The facilities are open daily for the remainder of the summer with shop hours from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day. In the weekend mountain tours offered, trained staff members demonstrate everything a rider needs to know and helps riders of all ability levels learn new skills. The tour includes a gondola ride to the summit and a ride out to the old fire tower.
