Plein Air Pop-Up Set in Fleischmanns

FLEISCHMANNS – The work of 20 plein air painter will be featured in a pop-up gallery on Main Street, Fleischmanns, on weekends from May 29 through July 3.
Every Tuesday when the weather cooperates, a group of landscape painters gather at a different site in Delaware County to paint the views, barns, fields, mountains, streams, or flora of the beautiful countryside.
Painting the landscapes of the Catskills is not new but the East Branch Delaware River Plein Air Painters, EBDRPAP, are happy to carry on the tradition of the Hudson School and its off shoot, The Pakatakan School of Arkville which was in its heyday in the late 19th century and beginning 20th century.
Getting started
The group started in 2007 when Alix Travis, a recent transplant from Ohio, noticed Oneida Hammond with her easel painting in Halcottsville. Travis had been a member of a plein air group in Ohio and was looking to form a group of painters to meet regularly to paint outside. The two started painting regularly and one by one other artists in the area joined them. Today their number has grown to 30 active members.
During the winter months the group meets via Zoom where they share their work from a prompt developed from the previous week. The Zoom meetings were a result of the pandemic when no one wanted to meet as a group in person but were happy to explore subject ideas and to exchange technique tip and critiques. All agree that painting outdoors is their passion.
Some of the artists work in watercolor, others in oils, acrylic, or pastel. They are Robert Axelrod, Donna David, Agnes Freas, Gail Freund, Tabitha Gilmore-Barnes, Kathy Green, Oneida Hammond, Patrice Lorenz, Ron Macklin, Helen Manzo, Sheila McManus, Sumiko Patrone, Lesley A. Powell, Deb Ruggerio, Michelle Sidrane, Sara Stone, Sharon Suess, Alix Travis, Ros Welchman, Dan Williams. If their names are familiar to you that is because many of them have exhibited and sold their work in local as well as NYC galleries.
Fleischmanns is becoming an important home to arts and artists. In addition to the EBDRPAP Pop Up Gallery, the Village is enjoying a renaissance of new businesses including 1053 Gallery and The Arts Inn, both on Main Street. Fleischmanns is becoming an Arts Village in the Catskills.
EBDRPAP is grateful to Mark Birman for allowing it to present its Pop-Up Gallery in his building at 1084 Main Street, the former Community Bank. The Pop-Up Gallery is sponsored by a grant from Delaware Tourism and Development and Fleisch- manns First.
