Margaretville — The team of Jack Jordan, Kathy Jordan, Duane Ely and Rich Bowie captured the first-place trophy in the 19th annual Tunament held Friday, July 26 at Hanah Country Club, Margaretville.
Earning a second-place finish in the 2019 Tunament was the foursome of Tom Sanford, Ron Hull, Ryan Hull and John Hornbeck.
In other competition at the event, winners were: Long Drive Men: Joe Siclaire; Long Drive Men Over 70; Rich Bowie; Long Drive Women: Barb Funck; Closest to the Pin #7: Joe Siclaire and Closest to the Pin #12: Bob Novak. Last week’s Tunament attracted 52 golfers, including many friends and relatives of the tournament’s namesake.
The Tunament is a golf tournament honoring the memory of Margaretville native Bill “Tuna” Sanford who passed away 2001. Bill was an avid golfer and a strong supporter of the athletic programs at his alma mater, Margaretville Central School (MCS). After his untimely passing at age 44, good friends Bob Ackershoek and Peter Sluiter organized the tournament as a tribute to Bill and also established a scholarship at MCS that has been awarded each year to graduating seniors who exemplify Bill’s commitment to athletics and sportsmanship. This year’s recipient of a $1,000 scholarship was Denali Finkle.
Peter has served as the event’s primary organizer following Bob’s death six year ago. He indicated that next year’s 20th anniversary event is being planned as the final one. The date has not been set, but Peter is encouraging anyone who has ever participated or contributed to get involved in the 20th Tunament. He can be reached at: firstname.lastname@example.org
Although next year’s Tunament will be the final action on the golf course, a strong fund-raising effort over the years has resulted in a balance of nearly $20,000 in the scholarship fund, enough to provide $1,000 awards to MCS students for the next 20 years.
