Each year, proceeds from the Wawaka Lake 5K Run/Walk are donated to a charitable organization. Funds from this year’s event will be given to the Wawaka Hose Company Restoration Project — to defray the costs of restoration work on the hamlet’s historic firehouse.
Proceeds from two previous races were donated to a local team of women who were participating in the Avon Walk To End Breast Cancer in New York City. Money from the Wawaka Lake 5K Run/Walk’s second year was given to local residents as part of their fund-raising efforts on behalf of the Delaware County Relay for Life fight against cancer. Last year’s race proceeds were also designated for the Wawaka Hose Company Restoration Project.
The Halcottsville Fire Department took over event sponsorship duties two years ago, but founding organizer Kathy Johnson continues to oversee the race operations.
